Wagstaff moved to Abilene to begin the practice of law. Wagstaff was among the first pioneer lawyers in the young Texas prairie town. Quickly distinguishing himself as a superior trial lawyer in West Texas, he gained statewide recognition from the legal community and was a civic leader for more than a half century.
